Icarus Heights: Kind of a Business… Kind of a Community Service… Hopefully, Kind of Fun…

My name is Daniel Smith and I’m the main proprietor of this seemingly unfocused mix of energies called “Icarus Heights.” My family and I have resided in Teller County for more than a decade now. Essentially, I wanted to find a way to pack all of my needs, passions and responsibilities into one ongoing income-producing project. I’m hoping that it will allow me to bring positivity to the community, help fulfill parental responsibilities, allow me to work on my passions, meet my income needs and also be flexible enough to adapt to the ever-changing schedules of rurally-raised children…. That’s a big ask for any undertaking. It will certainly bend, flex and change as it moves forward. I’m not planning on always doing it on my own, but that’s mostly how it’s starting… along with some help from my brother Justin.

The core mission is to take the money that the community is already spending on store-bought firestarters and move that money to a commensurate local product (Sloth Candles). We will then use a portion of that money to spearhead various local endeavors. No extra money has to actually be spent by local residents, but we receive cool local bonuses on top of the warm glow from the woodburning stoves scattered throughout our community. The projects range from student field trips to entrepreneurial grants. Check out the home page for a full list of primary community initiatives.

All you have to do is start ordering your firestarters from us, and we will get things moving! Thanks for supporting this slightly out-of-the-box endeavor.
