The Martin Luther King Youth Center and church on the East Side recently finished constructing a new community garden featuring fresh fruits and vegetables that, once fully grown, will be made available for disadvantaged local families.

The new garden features nine planter boxes full of crops such as watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumbers, bell peppers, chiles and tomatoes. The Rev. Paul Montoya said aside from the apparent benefits the garden represents to the East Side community, the garden was constructed to honor former church Pastor George Montoya, who passed away in March.
